SACRAMENTO, CA - Assembly Democratic Caucus Chair Rick Chavez Zbur (D-Hollywood) issued the following statement in response to today's U.S. Supreme Court decision in B.P.J. v. West Virginia and Hecox v. Idaho, which upheld state laws restricting transgender girls from participating in girls' school sports.
"I am deeply disappointed by today's Supreme Court decision. Transgender young people deserve the same dignity, respect, and opportunity as every other student. They belong in our schools, they belong in our communities, and they deserve leaders who are committed to protecting their rights—not using them as political targets.
"We should absolutely be investing in girls' and women's sports. But real equality means more than excluding transgender athletes. It means ensuring girls have equal funding, safe and modern facilities, quality coaching, access to youth sports, and the resources they need to succeed.
"We can stand up for girls and women in sports without abandoning transgender youth. I will continue fighting to ensure that every young person—including LGBTQ+ youth—knows they belong and has the opportunity to thrive."
Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur serves as the Democratic Caucus Chair for the California State Assembly and represents the 51st Assembly District, which includes Universal City, Hollywood, Hancock Park, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and other portions of Los Angeles.
