Assemblymember Zbur Releases Statement on the Arson Attack at Beth Israel Congregation

For immediate release:

The arson attack at Beth Israel Congregation is a gut-wrenching reminder that antisemitism remains a clear and present danger across our nation. My heart goes out to Rabbi Russell, the congregants of Beth Israel, and the entire Jackson community as they confront this heinous act of violence.

History reminds us that Beth Israel is no stranger to such terror; in 1967, the synagogue was bombed by the Klan for the congregation's principled stand during the Civil Rights Movement. Today's attack proves that the alarm being sounded on rising antisemitism is no exaggeration. We cannot, and will not, allow this to become the "new normal."

This persistent threat is precisely why we in the California Legislature continue to prioritize the Nonprofit Security Grant Program to help protect our houses of worship and nonprofits that serve marginalized communities. It is also why Assemblymember Dawn Addis and I authored AB 715 last year: to keep Jewish students safe and help prevent antisemitic hate from taking root in the next generation of Californians.

I expect a rigorous investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. We in California stand in unwavering solidarity with Jackson and with every member of the Jewish community who is currently forced to fear for their safety.
