Assemblymember Zbur Honors Lives Lost and Community Response One Year Since the Start of the Eaton and Palisades Fires

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Democratic Caucus Chair and Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur (D–Hollywood) today released a statement marking one year since the start of the Eaton and Palisades fires, reflecting on their devastating impact on communities across the region.

"One year ago today marked the beginning of one of the most painful disasters in California's history. The Eaton and Palisades fires tore through our region, destroying homes, forcing evacuations, and tragically taking 31 lives.

"These fires burned along the edges of our district, but their impact was felt across our entire community. I'm proud of the way the City of Santa Monica, parts of Los Angeles, and the City of Beverly Hills stepped up to support those affected by the Palisades Fire—serving as one of the central hubs for critical services like shelter, food, water, blankets, and one-on-one assistance with insurance claims. I'm also deeply grateful to my staff, who were with me at all hours of the day and night to help ensure people's needs were met.

"Today, as we reflect on the immeasurable loss and trauma caused by these fires, we honor and thank the firefighters, first responders, and neighbors who stepped up when it mattered most. As we continue to rebuild and prepare for the challenges ahead, we remain focused on protecting our communities, improving readiness, and making sure no one is left behind when disaster strikes.

"My heart remains with everyone still healing."

Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur serves as the Democratic Caucus Chair for the California State Assembly and represents the 51st Assembly District, which includes Universal City, Hollywood, Hancock Park, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and other portions of Los Angeles.
